The book follows Rubina’s journey from caring for aging parents across borders to building Olive Community Services, a nonprofit focused on helping seniors experience greater connection, dignity, health, and purpose. Through personal stories, lessons in community building, and insights from the people who helped shape Olive, the book explores what it takes to turn a deeply personal experience into a movement that serves others.

Building Olive

Building Olive began with Rubina Chaudhary’s experience as an only child raising a family in the United States while her parents aged in Canada. The challenges of caregiving from a distance, combined with the lessons her parents taught her about dignity, simplicity, and what matters at the end of life, planted the idea that would eventually become Olive Community Services.

Inspired by her family’s experience, Rubina built Olive from an initial conviction into a community centered on helping seniors avoid isolation and maintain connection, health, and purpose. Through the book, she shares the personal losses, challenges, leadership lessons, and community relationships that shaped that journey.

Rubina Chaudhary is the founder of Olive Community Services, a nonprofit dedicated to creating meaningful opportunities for seniors to live, learn, and thrive within a connected community. Her work grew from a personal caregiving journey and a desire to create a better model of aging built around dignity, belonging, connection, and purpose. Through Olive, Rubina has developed an ecosystem of programs designed to support seniors and the families and communities around them. She is the author of Building Olive: Cultivating Community That Helps Seniors Live, Learn, Thrive, a memoir and founder’s playbook sharing the story behind Olive and the lessons she learned while building it.
