Life Sized Voices Featuring Dr. Karen Somerville

Hey, Areej here!

What if your dream home became the biggest problem your family ever faced?

For most Canadians, buying a newly built home represents security, stability, and a fresh start.

But Dr. Karen Somerville reveals another side of homeownership in Canada’s Other Housing Crisis: The One That Industry and Governments Don’t Want to Talk About.

After experiencing a devastating new home disaster herself, Somerville spent more than two decades speaking with homeowners, professionals, and others affected by construction defects. Her book brings together eight real-life Canadian families whose homes became sources of financial hardship, health concerns, broken trust, and years of stress.

And her message is not that every builder is bad.

There are good builders in Canada.

The problem is that consumers often have no reliable, objective way to tell the difference before they buy.

5 Reasons You Should Read This Book

1. It Reveals a Housing Crisis Most People Never See
Canada’s housing crisis is usually discussed in terms of affordability and supply. Somerville examines another crisis: what happens when someone can afford a newly built home, only to discover serious construction defects after getting the keys.

2. It Puts Real Families at the Center
The book features eight cases from across Canada involving different types of housing. Behind every construction defect is a family dealing with consequences that can extend far beyond the physical structure of the home.

3. It Shows That the Cost Can Be Much Greater Than Repairs
The stories reveal financial hardship, lost time, stress, health impacts, loss of privacy and enjoyment, strained relationships, and in some cases serious mental health consequences.

4. It Questions Whether Consumers Are Properly Protected
Somerville examines Canada’s fragmented consumer protection system, building code enforcement, warranty programs, and the difficulty homeowners can face when trying to get serious defects properly addressed.

5. It Gives Homebuyers Practical Ways to Protect Themselves
The book does not simply identify the problem. Its final section provides practical guidance for buyers before signing, before closing, after taking possession, and when choosing a home inspector.

About the Book

Canada’s Other Housing Crisis grew out of Somerville’s own experience.

In 2000, she and her husband moved into what they believed would be their dream home. Instead, they discovered serious problems including water leaks, inadequate HVAC, and more than 50 Ontario Building Code violations. The situation eventually affected Somerville’s health, forced the couple to leave their home, and resulted in years of legal and financial battles.

That experience eventually led Somervilleand her husband to co-found Canadians for Properly Built Homes, with the goal of increasing consumer awareness, helping affected homeowners, and advocating for stronger consumer protection legislation.

The book turns that experience into a much larger conversation about how Canada builds, regulates, and protects the homes its citizens depend on.

Because a home should protect your family, not put your family at risk.

The Life Sized Perspective

At Life Sized Publishing, we believe books can do more than tell stories.

They can expose problems that need attention.

They can give people information before they make life-changing decisions.

And they can turn one person’s experience into something that helps protect others.

That is exactly what Dr. Somerville has done with Canada’s Other Housing Crisis.

The book is dedicated to victims of improperly built homes, and its net proceeds will be donated to Canadians for Properly Built Homes.

We are proud to bring this important book into the world.
